I woke up today to a pretty amazing surprise: My Busy Builder Brain was the lead story in the Ottawa Lookout newsletter, alongside a beautiful feature about the book, my family, and the story behind it.
A few days earlier, I had the chance to sit down with Ottawa Lookout senior editor Sarah MacFarlane-Youngdale at a library in Kanata to talk about how My Busy Builder Brain came to be. What I expected to be a conversation about my little children’s book turned into a much bigger conversation about motherhood, autism, my son’s diagnosis, my own late diagnosis, our family’s move to Ottawa, and what it means for a child to feel understood and represented.
The resulting article, Kanata mom-of-three pens children’s book inspired by son’s autism diagnosis, captured our story with so much care.
Sarah also spoke about Eli not simply as a child with autism, but as the funny, creative, affectionate, social kid he is. That meant a lot to me because it gets to the heart of why I wrote this book in the first place.

Being an indie author can be discouraging sometimes. There’s a huge amount of work behind every book, especially when you’re doing all the publishing and marketing yourself. Moments like this make all of that work feel worthwhile.
